Online IELTS assessment test — find your band in 25 minutes.

Four short papers covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, scored against the public IELTS band descriptors. You finish with a band estimate for each skill, the gap to your target written in weeks, and a study plan that works backwards from your test date.

What an IELTS assessment test is for

An assessment test is not a practice test. A practice test exists so you can rehearse the format; an assessment exists so you can find out where you stand before deciding what to study. Those are different jobs and they want different lengths — you do not need three hours to establish that your Reading is around band 6 and your Writing is around band 5.5. Twenty-five minutes of well-chosen questions across the four skills gets close enough to plan from, and leaves the three-hour sitting for a full mock closer to the date, when rehearsing stamina is the point.

The four papers

Listening

5 min

A shortened set drawn from the four IELTS section types, so the estimate reflects where you actually lose marks — map labelling and multiple-choice fail for different reasons.

Reading

6 min

Academic or General Training passages depending on the test you are sitting, with the question types that decide most bands: True/False/Not Given, matching headings, and gap fill.

Writing

12 min

One shortened task, marked on all four public criteria separately — Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

Speaking

3 min

A short spoken exchange, out loud, with follow-up questions. Fluency and pronunciation cannot be estimated from writing, so this part is not optional.

You can pause between skills. Progress is saved per skill, so an interrupted Reading section does not cost you the Listening you already finished.

What you get at the end

A band per skill

Four separate estimates, because your overall band is their average and the weakest one is almost always where the fastest gain is.

The gap to your target

Stated in bands and in weeks of work, against the test date you give. Sometimes the honest answer is that the date is too soon.

Your first errors, named

Not 'improve your grammar' — the specific patterns you produced, ready to be drilled and re-tested until they stop appearing.

A dated plan

What to practise and on which days between now and your test.

How the scoring works

Listening and Reading are marked against the answer key, so there is nothing to argue with. Writing and Speaking are judged by two independent AI evaluators built by different companies, each scoring against the public IELTS band descriptors. When the two disagree by more than half a band, the lower score is the one you are given. A single model marking its own work is the reason most free checkers score generously; two models that have to agree is harder to please, which is the point.

Take the assessment

Twenty-five minutes now saves you weeks of studying the wrong skill. You will see your band per skill and an honest read on whether your target is reachable by your test date.

IELTS assessment test — FAQ

Is this IELTS assessment test really free?
Yes. The full 25-minute four-skill test and the band estimate cost nothing. You sign in with Google at the end so the result and the plan are saved to your account — that is the only thing asked before you see your band. Some competing tools skip the sign-in; they also mark with a single model and score generously, which is a worse trade.
How accurate is an online IELTS level test?
Treat it as a band estimate, not a prediction. Listening and Reading are marked against a key and are reliable. Writing and Speaking are judged against the public descriptors by two independent evaluators, and where they disagree by more than half a band the lower score is used — deliberately conservative. What no online test can reproduce is the pressure of the real exam room, which for most candidates costs a half band on Speaking.
How long does the assessment take?
About 25 minutes in total: 5 minutes Listening, 6 Reading, 12 Writing and 3 Speaking. You can stop partway and pick each skill up again later — progress is kept per skill rather than for the test as a whole.
Do I need a microphone?
For the Speaking section, yes, and headphones help for Listening. You can complete the other three skills without one, but the overall band estimate needs all four to be meaningful — Speaking is a quarter of your score.
Is it the same test for IELTS Academic and General Training?
Listening and Speaking are the same, as they are in the real exam. Reading and Writing differ, and you choose which test you are sitting before you start, so the passages and the task you get match it.
What if my result is much lower than I expected?
That is the most useful outcome this test produces, and it is common — self-estimated bands run about a band high for most people. The plan that follows is built from the real number, which is the only one your test-day result will care about.
Can I take the assessment test more than once?
Yes, and it is worth re-testing every three to four weeks rather than weekly. Band movement is slow enough that a weekly retest mostly measures noise, and the practice sessions in between give a better read on whether a specific error is actually going away.
