How the overall band is worked out

Your four skill bands are averaged and rounded to the nearest whole or half band, with one wrinkle that works in your favour: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Because the four skills carry equal weight, the cheapest route to a higher overall score is nearly always a half band in your worst skill rather than another half band in your best — and with the .25 rule, that single half band often moves the overall number twice as far as it looks like it should.

These are the standard published conversions. The official position is that the exact conversion varies a little between test versions to account for differences in difficulty, so treat a result here as accurate to about half a band. Writing and Speaking are not in the chart because they have no raw mark — an examiner awards those bands directly.

IELTS band score calculator — FAQ

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Add your four skill bands, divide by four, then round to the nearest whole or half band. An average ending .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.5, 6.5, 6.5 and 5.5 averages 6.25 and becomes 6.5; 7, 7, 7 and 6 averages 6.75 and becomes 7.
Is the raw score to band conversion the same in every IELTS test?
Not exactly. The published tables here are the standard conversions and are what everyone uses to estimate, but the official position is that the conversion varies slightly between test versions to account for differences in difficulty. Treat a table result as accurate to roughly half a band, not as a guarantee.
Why is General Training Reading marked more harshly?
Because the passages are easier. General Training Reading uses everyday texts — notices, advertisements, workplace documents — so a higher raw mark is needed for the same band. 30 out of 40 is band 6 in General Training and band 7 in Academic Reading. It is not a penalty; it is the same standard applied to a different text difficulty.
Is there a band score for Writing and Speaking out of 40?
No. Writing and Speaking have no raw mark — an examiner awards a band directly on each of four published criteria and averages them. That is why this calculator converts Listening and Reading only, and takes Writing and Speaking as bands you already have.
What overall band do I need?
Most UK and Australian universities ask for 6.5 overall with no individual band below 6.0. Nursing and medical registration commonly asks for 7.0 in each skill, and some for 7.5. The per-skill minimum catches more people out than the overall figure — an overall 7 with a 6.5 in Writing fails a 7-in-each requirement.
Can I round 6.25 down to 6?
No — .25 always rounds up under the official rule, which works in your favour. It is the one place in IELTS scoring where the rounding is generous, and it means a single half band in your weakest skill can move your overall score.
